Joey and his friend in high school

You’re Invitated

With all the end-of-year celebrations and graduations going on over the last few weeks, I’ve been thinking back on some of my memories from the end of various school years. One stuck out in my head because it’s one of those moments that you still play over in your head, even years later.

It was around thirty years ago that my friend and I were going to host an end-of-the-year party. We were super-excited as we made plans, and I was tasked with creating the invitations. It was the early 90s, so you know what my go-to invitation-making software was: The Print Shop®. (Made, coincidentally, by the same company that created The Toy Shop which I wrote about a few weeks ago!) It was the simple graphic editor of that time, allowing you to create a variety of signs, banners, and certificates with ease.

You could also print invitations. Sounds easy, right? Frankly, the thing that took the longest was listening to the dot matrix spit out a hundred invitations. But, because it was the late 80s and 90s, there is something that wasn’t a part of every text editor like there is now: spell-check. Spell-checks existed, but they weren’t (at least that’s my excuse for my error) a part of The Print Shop.

So two excited, somewhat dorky kids brought a stack of invitations to school and started handing them out. I don’t know who the first person was to point it out, but someone finally asked, “Why does it say ‘Invitated?’” My fragile heart sank. How could I have misspelled something so mundane? I handed, to all my friends, invitations that said “You’re Invitated.” It was a while before I lived that down. And as this story shows, I still remember it and cringe at my mistake from time to time.

But embarrassment aside, we ended up having a great party, and we rang out the end of another school year. By the time the party arrived, I don’t think any (or many) people even remembered I had misspelled the word.

This time of year is fun, isn’t it? The end of the school year helps to usher in the beginning of the summer season. A time for vacations and making family memories. A time for getting out of our routine a little bit, and hopefully getting into the garden as well. I’m happy to let you know that you are officially “invitated” to have some fun with your flowers and fruit trees this summer. I’ll be right there with you.

Speaking of fun in the garden, we had a wonderful time holding our first Yoga in the Garden session this past Saturday. We partnered with Kristen Molinaro of Keystone Yoga, which is located just a few blocks away from Kerby’s, and our participants had a meaningful experience in our Greenhouse, enjoying yoga among the beautiful plants. Even Precious wanted to participate, you can see her in a photo below. Thank you to those who came out and shared this with us!

Plants Want to Grow!

100 mile-per-hour winds, torrential rains, falling trees, heavy equipment, and pruning were thrown at Joey’s bushes, and they just kept on growing.
