How would you like to eat all you want, take a really long nap, and wake up beautiful? I can see all of you nodding as you read that. It may not be possible for us, but it is the life of a butterfly.
And what a life they have. As soon as they emerge from their little eggs, they are hungry, hungry caterpillars. I’m sure many of you have tried to raise monarch caterpillars before, and they sure can go through milkweed! After they’ve eaten their fill and become plump little crawlers, they head to a comfortable, safe spot to relax in a chrysalis, while they get ready for their final transformation.
When they emerge, they are just as beautiful as can be. I could sit in our garden and just watch fluttering butterflies for hours, marveling as they flit from flower to flower, all in preparation for continuing their miraculous life cycle.
It’s one of those things that makes gardening so much fun, and the great news is that butterfly gardening is easy. The flowers that attract adult butterflies are both hardy and colorful. Just add in a few host plants as food for caterpillars, and you’ll be ready to attract a whole host of butterflies to your garden. This week, check out our Butterfly Gardening 101 video to get some of our tips and tricks for creating a butterfly garden.
And when you feel like emerging from your cocoon, come see us at Kerby’s. Last year, we unveiled our butterfly mural that is the perfect picture spot. Don’t forget to share your pics with us on Instagram and Facebook. We want to see you become like a beautiful butterfly and spread your wings.
