We’re back open after Tropical Storm Debby, and what a great day it is because fruit trees just arrived! Here are three varieties that will thrive through hurricane season.
Mangos: We have Fairchild, Tommy Atkins, Miracle, and Lancetilla now in stock. Mangos are tropical trees native to Southern Asia, so they’re used to heavy storms. And they seemingly last forever — in 2022, the BBC reported about century-old mangos that are still producing today.
Guava: The Ruby Supremes are back and are supreme — they’re easy to grow, highly productive, and the fruit is aromatic, sweet, and juicy. The University of Florida recommends keeping guava trees around 10 feet tall to avoid high wind damage, but they’re native to Central and South America along with the Caribbean, so they’re definitely familiar with hurricanes.
And June Plum: A tropical fruit native to regions like Tahiti — and if you’re watching surfing in the Paris Olympics at all, you know they get some storms. The trees are fast-growing and produce small, crunchy fruits that are a little sour; they have a pineapple-mango flavor.
