The possibilities for our 9B zone are practically endless.

For small flowers, try Mona Lavender, Shrimp Plants, or Begonias.

For foliage: Foxtail Ferns can thrive in the shade; Philodendron Selloum; Japanese Aralia; or Crotons, which do well in part shade so they don’t burn but can maintain their variegation. Various Coleus, Yucca, the vibrant Persian Shield, Ginger, and Caladiums are also great options.

If you’re wanting a small tree, Lady Finger or Areca palms are ideal. Larger Money Trees are also fun and said to bring good fortune.

For flowering shrubs or vines, we love various Jasmines, Camellias, Azaleas, and Gardenias. Heliconias can also take more shade in our zone. Hydrangeas are a classic beauty that need full shade. And Fireball Mallows are super fun.

If you’re wanting something that grows lower, try Ajuga, Purple Queen, Oyster Plants, or Creeping Fig. Bromeliads also do well in mass plantings.

And any traditional houseplant, like Dracaenas, Monsteras, Hoyas, or Calatheas, can also thrive in shady gardens in our zone.

Just make sure to protect any tropical plants if we ever get a cold snap.

And let us know if you have any questions about specific shade plants. We want you to succeed in your garden!

Anybody can sell you plants, we make sure you succeed.
