Girls and Man Pulling a Rose to Bring Down a Tree

I’m a Lumberjack and I’m OK

Lumberjack is not really a career you hear much about nowadays. Maybe that’s because we live in Florida and don’t have an overwhelming number of forests. There are, however, plenty of people that cut down trees, and Abby and Maddy have joined their ranks and become honorary lumberjacks.

We were having some tree trimming done around our yard by Duffey Tree Care, and the girls were sitting in the backyard watching them work. Because some of our trees are so tall, they got to watch them work in the front yard from the backyard, way up in the air over the house, and they got a kick out of waving to the trimmers way up high.

One of the things that we needed done was for an old dead tree to be cut down. It was just a little too big for my chainsaw to handle. The plan was to drop it down into the yard and cut it up for firewood. It was a big tree though, and so Abby and Maddy got to try their hands out at being lumberjacks.

The tree needed to fall uphill a little, so to make sure it landed in the right place a rope was attached to a truck as an anchor, and then all hands were needed for pulling. With Abby and Maddy’s added strength, the tree came down, right where we wanted it, and the girls were awfully proud of themselves and their massive muscles. I’m not sure if they’ve found a new career, but with some discussions of angles, distance, and force, we are calling it a physics lesson. Just one more subject you can learn about outside in the garden.

Girls with Chainsaw

P.S. Duffey Tree Care does amazing work, with great service and attention to detail if you need tree work done.

P.P.S. The girls did not use the chainsaw, Mom just wanted a quick picture. I’m not sure who was more nervous, the girls, Mom, or the chainsaw’s owner.

P.P.P.S. For a laugh (if you dare) here is a link to Monty Python’s The Lumberjack Song. The humor gets a little, well, Monty Python-y as you get to the end. You’ve been warned.
