Has anyone else noticed a strange proliferation of squirrels in the area? We had to have a large tree cut down in our yard that was getting old and weak. So you would think that by removing some potential habitat, we would actually see less squirrels in the yard. But over the last few weeks, we have seen a crazy number of squirrels. Or perhaps I should rephrase that. We have seen a number of crazy squirrels. Their daring acrobatic feats are something to watch. Each morning, we see numerous groups of squirrels chasing each other at breakneck speed up a tree, down a tree, from one tree to another. It’s amazing that they can scurry and leap, landing nimbly almost every time.
The other morning, I was in the yard enjoying the sunrise and a warm cup of coffee when two of them tore across the yard not 10 feet from where I was. They startled me since I was focused on the trees in the yard. I felt a little surrounded. And if that wasn’t bad enough, Kim caught one of them hanging out in our jaboticaba tree staring right in the kitchen window. Kim said she felt like she was being watched, and as you can see from the picture, she was right!
They do seem like they are having fun. At last count, there were at least a dozen going crazy through our remaining tree canopy. I hope they find what they are looking for or settle whatever argument they are in the midst of. But most of all, I really hope they leave my garden alone.
