From flowers to fruits, the papayas are producing at the Nursery. Here are five tips and tricks to help them thrive.
1. Plant in full sun, away from heavy winds. Papayas are top-heavy once they start fruiting, so strong winds can snap the tree.
2. Even though Papayas like well-draining soil like our native sandy soil, we do recommend amending it with compost to help it establish and maintain moisture levels. If not, you’ll probably have to water more once it’s established.
3. And speaking of watering, remember our go-to watering schedule for establishing new plants: every day the first month, every other day the second month, twice a week the third month, and consistent watering thereafter (once per week or more frequently if our weather is very hot and dry). If you follow this routine, you’re bound to have a much easier time getting the papaya to fruit.
4. Papayas are heavy feeders – well, not with a fork and spoon! According to the University of Florida, papayas should be fertilized regularly with an all-purpose mix, such as Espoma Organic® Plant-tone® or our Kerby’s Special 8-4-8.
5. Papayas don’t need pruning. But make sure to remove expired leaves to reduce disease and insect issues and so the fruit above it doesn’t scar.
