Do you smell that? It’s onion season. Here’s how to plant, care for, and harvest them.
Onions need full sun and rich soil to develop large bulbs. If you’re planting in the ground, amend our sandy soil with rich compost. You can also grow them in containers or raised beds.
Either way, plant them two to six inches apart and about an inch deep with the growth point sticking up.
Once planted, fertilize with a balanced formula. After that, the University of Florida suggests fertilizing monthly with a nitrogen-rich formula. And don’t forget to water! Follow our Watering Schedule to guarantee a successful harvest.
After four to five months, it’s time to harvest. A good indicator is when the tops are drooping. Harvest when the soil is dry: gently pull them up, then cut the tops down, and let them dry for a couple of days. Store in a cool, dry place and enjoy.
