I got on this kick during staff interviews one year where my first question would be, “What is your favorite pizza?” I know, it’s kind of goofy, but the variety of answers made it fun, and it tended to create a more friendly, less stiff conversation. Everyone was different. Some would go with a safe answer like pepperoni. Every now and then I’d get something a little different like onions or peppers. And on occasion someone would answer, “Pineapple.” But not often. There is nothing so polarizing as putting pineapple on pizza. (As seen in this article I found: Hawaiian Pizza: The Truth Behind Its Infamous Reputation (Why Is It So Bad?) – Flavor Insider.)
Some people see it as the ultimate pizza sacrilege. Some people just think it’s gross. I am not one of those people. While it isn’t my favorite topping, I do enjoy pineapple and ham together on a crispy slice of pie.
For those of you that detest pineapple, you’re going to hate what I did the other night. I was going to make pizza, but we were low on toppings. We didn’t even have a can of pineapple. But we do have a fruit tree outside that has started producing lots of fruits. And we even had some ripening on the counter. So, I cut them up, fried up a little bacon, and created my own pizza. Watch out Papa Johns, the Starfruit-Bacon Pizza is going to be the next big thing. They look more or less like pineapple, so when the girls came home and saw the pizza, they asked if it was pineapple, and I said, “Sure, it’s something like that…” The good news is that it was a hit. I think Starfruit-Bacon Pizza is going to become a regular in our family, as long as our tree keeps producing. If you get a chance, I dare you to give it a try.
When I’m not dabbling with new pizza toppings, I am out in my backyard tending to my veggie garden. I’ve learned lots of lessons over the years, and this Saturday, I’m going to share them all with you at our Advanced Veggie Gardening Seminar. Have any specific questions? Email them to me at [email protected], and I’ll try to include them in the seminar. And even though it doesn’t really feel like it, the first day of fall is just a few days away, and here at Kerby’s, we are just 9 days away from our Fall Kickoff on September 28th. Click here or on the graphic below for all the fun we have planned. I don’t know about you, but fall is one of my favorite seasons in the garden.
