Veggie Seeds: Sow Them or Transplant Them?

Should you sow your veggies seeds? Or transplant them? It actually depends on what you’re planting.

Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Eggplant, Peppers, Tomatoes, and most leafy greens can easily survive transplanting, while sowing Beans, Corn, Cucumbers, Peas, Squashes, and Watermelon is best.  If you have to transplant them, make sure the roots are very strong beforehand.

On the other hand, Carrots, Mustard, Celery, and Spinach are kind of in the middle. You can sow them or transplant with care.

No matter what you’re planting though, it’s vital that you follow the planting depth [shown on the seed packet]. If you plant too deep, they might not sprout; too shallow, and they might wash away. Rule of thumb, smaller seeds are more shallow, bigger seeds are deeper.

Now’s the time to start veggie seeds so they’re sprouting or ready to transplant by early spring. And our Veggie Seminar is February 17, so we’ll definitely have starters in stock before that event.

Anybody can sell you plants, we make sure you succeed.
