Veggie season is kicking off here in Florida — we just restocked all of our seeds for the fall vegetable season. Here are some you can start now and in September.
Beans: Bush and Pole. Sow seeds or start in a tray with light seedling soil. Only transplant once the roots are strong.
Carrots. Sprinkle seeds in the garden and thin seedlings to encourage larger carrots.
Tomatoes and Peppers. In Florida, Sun Gold, Roma, Pork Chop, Beefsteak, and Cherokee Purple tomatoes are some varieties that do well. While Jalapeño, Chili Ghost and Habanero, and Sweet are some pepper varieties.
Squash, Summer and Winter, along with Eggplant. Like Beans, only transplant once the roots are strong.
Here’s everything the University of Florida suggests starting in September: Arugula, Beets, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Celery, Collards, Cucumbers, Kale, Lettuce (there are so many varieties, this is just a few), Mustards, Onion, Radish, Spinach, Swiss Chard, and Turnips.
And always remember to read how far down to plant the seed, this is vital for germination. A good rule of thumb: smaller seeds are planted closer to the surface, larger seeds are planted deeper.
