This newsletter could also have the title “Always Have a Backup Plan.” A few weeks ago, we were supposed to take my nephew on a bike-riding adventure. So, Kim picked him up, loaded up his bike, and we had plans to go out and have a fun, leisurely ride on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Except that the Sunday we had chosen ended up being the rainiest day in the last three months. It did not seem like a great day for riding bikes, or, frankly, for being outside. So, we needed a backup plan.
We were debating whether to play some board games or watch a movie, when suddenly all three kids came tromping through the house, looking for boots and rain jackets. Apparently, what we viewed as a miserable day outside was the perfect opportunity for creating a clubhouse.
They donned their jackets, put the hoods up, and set off outside to gather pallets, palms, and flooring and in very short order created a structure that was actually fairly waterproof. A little tough for adults to get into (I think that may have been intentional), but all in all a cozy place to spend some time on an inclement afternoon.
There is never a shortage of fun to be had in the yard, whether it’s planting, harvesting, planning, or, in the kids’ case, building. I think they may have had more fun with their backup plan than the biking we had originally planned. But we’ll find another day; after all, at this time of the year, we can expect lots of sunny days ahead.
